Kitchen scales are the main arena. American recipes specify butter, cheese and chocolate in ounces, while European and British recipes generally use grams. A chocolate ganache calling for 200 g of dark chocolate needs 7.055 oz — close to 7 oz but measurably off if you are scaling a precise confectionery formula. Most bakers who work across both systems keep a digital scale and bypass the volume-to-weight translation entirely.

Postage is another practical case. Many national postal services define letter and parcel thresholds in ounces (US, Canada) while others use grams (UK, EU). A letter weighing 42 g is 1.48 oz — under the US 2 oz first-class letter ceiling, but worth confirming the threshold for heavier pieces like padded envelopes.
