One meter equals approximately 3.28084 feet — or more precisely, 1 m = 100/30.48 ft, since one foot is exactly 0.3048 m by definition. The conversion is not a round number in either direction, which makes estimation harder than for, say, kilometers to miles. A rough rule of thumb: metres times three gives a ballpark in feet, with the true answer about 9% higher.

Altitude is where this conversion appears most often. Aviation worldwide reports altitude in feet (a legacy of early American and British dominance in air travel), so a cruising altitude of 10,000 m is 32,808 ft — close to the typical commercial cruise band of 35,000 ft (10,668 m). Mountain heights are often quoted in both: Mont Blanc at 4,808 m is 15,774 ft; Everest at 8,849 m is 29,032 ft.

Construction and real-estate listings frequently mix systems, especially in countries transitioning to metric. A ceiling height of 2.7 m converts to 8.86 ft — commonly described as 'just under 9 feet.' Floor plans drawn in meters need to be converted when quoted to US buyers, where room sizes in feet are the expected format.

The foot itself has a small but relevant variant: the US survey foot (0.3048006 m) differs from the international foot (0.3048 m exactly) by about 2 parts per million. For ordinary building work this is irrelevant, but US cadastral (land survey) data historically used the survey foot, so large land parcels measured in survey feet can differ detectably from their international-foot equivalents.
