Convert Megabyte to Gigabyte
1 megabyte = 0.001 gigabytes (MB to GB).
Need to move between megabytes and gigabytes? A megabyte is smaller than a gigabyte β it takes 1,000 of them to make a single gigabyte. One gigabyte works out to 1,000 megabytes in the other direction. The converter above does this in real time, and the reference chart lists the values that come up most often.
1 MB = 0.001 GB
How to convert Megabytes to Gigabytes
Multiply the megabyte value by 0.001 to get gigabytes.
Example: 10 megabytes = 0.01 gigabytes.
In decimal (SI) notation, 1 gigabyte equals exactly 1,000 megabytes β hard-disk manufacturers, network providers and phone data plans all use this definition. Dividing a megabyte figure by 1,000 gives gigabytes in decimal terms. A 500 MB video file is 0.5 GB; a 4,700 MB DVD image is 4.7 GB.
The classic gotcha: operating systems historically used binary units. Windows, macOS (before OS X 10.6) and many storage tools reported sizes in gibibytes (GiB) but labelled them 'GB.' In binary, 1 GiB = 1,024 MiB. That means a hard drive advertised as 500 GB (decimal, = 500,000 MB) showed up in older Windows Explorer as roughly 465 GB β because Windows was displaying 500,000 Γ· 1,024 Γ· 1,024 β 476.8 GiB and calling it gigabytes.
Modern operating systems have largely fixed the labelling: macOS since Snow Leopard reports decimal GB; modern Windows versions add a clarifying note. But embedded systems, router firmware, and legacy tools may still display binary-based figures. If a file size looks unexpectedly small after 'converting' MB to GB, check whether the source is using MB to mean mebibytes (MiB = 1,048,576 bytes) rather than megabytes (MB = 1,000,000 bytes).
Data plan arithmetic is purely decimal. A mobile plan offering 10 GB of data contains exactly 10,000 MB of capacity. If your phone's settings show data usage in MiB, multiply by 1.04858 to get MB before comparing to your plan allowance β otherwise you will think you have used more than you have.
