About area units
Area measures the size of a two-dimensional surface — how much flat space something covers. It is expressed in square units: square meters (m²) for rooms and buildings, square kilometers (km²) for cities and countries, hectares for farmland, and square miles or acres in the United States and UK. One hectare equals exactly 10,000 m², making it a convenient unit for agricultural land; one acre equals 43,560 square feet, which is a historical measure roughly equivalent to what an ox could plow in a day. Area is the quantity where metric and imperial differences cause the most confusion, because a misremembered conversion factor lands you off by an order of magnitude.
History & origin
The word 'acre' descends from Old English æcer, cognate with Latin ager ('field'). Its modern fixed value of 43,560 sq ft was standardised in England by statute in the 13th century. The hectare was introduced with the metric system in 1795 as a unit of 100 ares (1 are = 100 m²). Square miles and square kilometers emerged naturally once linear miles and kilometers were established, though the size difference — 1 mi² = 2.59 km² — means confusing them doubles your error squared.
Tips
Area scales as the square of length, not linearly. If you double every side of a room, the floor area quadruples — a fact that catches out anyone who scales a blueprint by a linear factor. Converting between systems compounds this: 1 foot = 0.3048 m, but 1 ft² = 0.0929 m², not 0.3048 m². Always square the linear conversion factor when moving between square units.
Common questions
- How big is a hectare compared to an acre?
- One hectare (10,000 m²) is approximately 2.471 acres. Conversely, 1 acre ≈ 0.405 hectares. A standard American football field including end zones is roughly 0.54 hectares, or about 1.32 acres.
- Why does the area conversion factor differ from the length conversion factor?
- Because area is length squared. If 1 foot = 0.3048 meters, then 1 square foot = 0.3048² = 0.0929 square meters. The same logic applies everywhere: always square the linear factor to get the area factor.
